Electronic waste is the fastest-growing solid waste stream in the world. In 2022, a record 62 million metric tonnes (Mt) of e-waste were generated globally—an 82% increase since 2010—and it’s expected to reach 82 million tonnes by 2030, according to the Global E-Waste Monitor.
Despite containing billions of dollars in recoverable materials, most electronics are discarded without being recycled. In fact, just 1% of rare earth element demand is met by e-waste recycling—a massive missed opportunity for resource recovery.
In the United States alone:

While electronics make up only 2% of landfill volume, they account for 70% of all toxic waste in landfills (The World Counts).
Improper disposal allows toxic substances—mercury, cadmium, lead, brominated flame retardants—to leach into soil and water, threatening ecosystems and public health for generations.
